10 Things Girls ALWAYS Do in Movies and NEVER Do in Real Life

All this teary talk of Nora Ephron (seriously, I’ve spent most of this day pinning her best quotes on Pinterest) has me thinking about chick flicks, and what we love about them.

Not many people can really nail the true-to-life rom-com like Nora did–but we’re a forgiving moviegoing bunch, I think, and more often than not, we excuse unrealistic behavior in romantic comedies.

Still, it has to be said, some of this stuff neva, eva happens–unless you tell me otherwise:

10. Answering the phone without saying hello, and hanging it up without saying goodbye. (This one goes for all people in movies.

0627_phone_ob.jpg

9. Going bonkers over a bouquet. (Really. You might get that one outlier at a wedding who’s had six chardonnays and a wild look in her eye all night. But two of ’em?)

0627_girls-bouquet_ob.jpg

8. Having hair like this at the beach.

0627_girls-beach_ob.jpg

7. Looking this cute during workout time–and, while I’m at it, having full-on conversations during a run or a spin class. Are you kidding?

0627_girls-workout_ob.jpg

6. Living alone in fabulous apartments (often with roof decks) in super expensive cities.

0627_girls-apartments_ob.jpg

5. Hanging out with a group of friends, at home, in your underwear. When your clothes are right in the other room. I think this one was invented for the boyfriends who get dragged along.

0627_girls-underwear_ob.jpg

4. Having ri-diculously high-powered jobs, like, one year out of college. I distinctly remember being angry right there in the theater when I heard that Lindsay Lohan was some kind of hotshot PR exec inJust My Luck. In real life, she was 20 at the time. Of course, having paid to go and see Just My Luck in the theater, I had no one to blame but myself.

0627_girls-careers_ob.jpg

3. Being able to run in heels like these…

0627_girls-heels_ob.jpg

2. But then falling down for no reason in all other situations. So klutzy and kute!

0627_girls-falling_ob.jpg

1. Giving this exact response when asked on a date: “I’d like that.”

What would you add to this list? Any on here you think I’m wrong about?

OMG: Cate Blanchett Has a Style Crush on the Olsen Twins, Too!

Duh, I’m obsessed with the Olsen twins and their style–Mary-Kate and Ashley have served as my style muses for the better part of a decade, and it turns out I’m not alone. My jaw practically came unhinged, however, when I found out that one of their biggest fans is none other than red carpet goddess Cate Blanchett.

mary-kate-ashley-olsen

She shared her “most stylish” list with British Vogue: “‘Tilda [Swinton] always looks fantastic. And I lovedGwyneth Paltrow in that Tom Ford dress at the Oscars, I thought that was so stunning,’ she said, name-checking Diana Vreeland, Lauren Hutton, costume designer Jacqueline West and the Olsen twins as her ultimate style icons.”

I mean…how cool is that!? I love that she has the kind of eye that can recognize style as different as Tilda Swinton and the Olsens, and that she thinks Gwyneth’s cape dress was a hit (it was one of my favorites this year, too!). Are you surprised by her picks? What do you think of the Olsens’ style? Discuss!

Quick Question: How Often Do You Use Your Eyelash Curler?

can’t tell you exactly how many eyelash curlers I own, but if I had to guess, I’d say about 10. Some are lying around my London flat, some are collecting dust in my beauty closet in Manhattan, and some are packed away in my beauty travel kits (I always keep a few packed in case I need to fly out at the last minute).

use-eyelash-curler

With that said, I hardly ever use any of them (unless I’m having my makeup done by a professional). I’msuch a mascara addict and false eyelash abuser—I recommend women use lash curlers on a regular basis, but I can’t tell you the last time I personally actually picked one up and clamped down. (I feel like such a hypocrite!)

What about you? How intimate are you with lash curlers? Do you use yours every single day or every now and then? Which one do you own?

Wedding Style Icon: 11 Wedding Ideas Inspired by Angelina Jolie

A-angelina-jolie-brad-pitt-wedding-dress-wedding-inspiration-wedding-style-1225
Since Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have long said they’re getting married to appease their kids, I’m expecting a pretty traditional event. I think we’ll see touches of black—the color it seems Angie is most comfortable with—but I don’t think their big day will look like a wedding hosted by The Addams Family.

Would you copy Angelina’s structured, feminine style for your wedding? If you’d pull together the Angie-inspired outfit below:

Alexander McQueen Cap Sleeve Cloque Knit Dress from Marissa Collections, $3,395. Kenneth Jay Lane Emerald Drop Earrings from Charm and Chain, $150. Alexander McQueen De Manta Clutch from Zappos, $777.99. Jimmy Choo Cosmic Leather Pumps from Net-a-Porter, $695.

Then your wedding any honeymoon might look like this:

I’d certainly say yes to that honeymoon!

Merry Chrismukkah! The Best Holiday TV Episodes Ever.

I don’t know about you guys, but I usually spend my holidays creating an Anna-shaped dent in the couch while I watch endless holiday movies and TV. This year to be extra productive (hah), I’ve made a master list of the best TV holiday episodes. Enjoy!

Sabrina the Teenage Witch—”Christmas Amnesia”

Sabrina accidentally deletes Christmas from the world’s memory—can you imagine how sad that would be? Luckily she gets Father Christmas to reinstate it.

Boy Meets World—”A Very Topanga Christmas”

Topanga joins Cory’s family for Christmas, but all of her different holiday traditions make him question their future together. But in the end, he gives her a promise ring. Aww.

Lizzie McGuire—”Aaron Carter’s Coming to Town”

Do you guys remember when Aaron Carter was like, the coolest? And he was dating Hilary Duff? Sigh. I miss those days. Oh, and they perform an awesome Christmas-themed “I Want Candy.”

Full House—”A Very Tanner Christmas”

Michelle: “I hope Santa brings me that new Barbie doll.”

Stephanie: “Michelle, Michelle, Michelle, you don’t ask Santa for just a Barbie.”

Best. Quote. (And so true!)

Friends—”The One with the Holiday Armadillo”

Ross teaches Ben about Hanukkah. With the Holiday Armadillo. Classic.

A Colbert Christmas

Anything involving Stephen Colbert is amazing. Add some holiday spirit? Perfection.

30 Rock—”Ludachristmas”

Kenneth teaches the staff—and everybody at home watching—the meaning of Christmas, but then they all decide to go out and tear down the big tree outside the office, which we do not do at home.

My So-Called Life—”So-Called Angels”

Homeless teens makes for a heavy holiday episode, but no great TV list is complete without MSCL.

Seinfeld—”The Strike”

Fun fact: Festivus is celebrated on December 23—which is my BIRTHDAY! Whee!

The OC—”Chrismukkah”

Seth Cohen’s Christmas + Hanukkah celebration become a pop-culture phenom in the 2000s, and the phrase is still common today! As it should be–Seth Cohen is a national treasure.

Rugrats—”Chanukah”

Rugrats: “Rugrats Chanukah”
Get More: Rugrats Episodes,Rugrats,Rugrats Games

You know what, this is probably my all-time favorite.

Downton Abbey Christmas Special

Matthew proposes to Mary. EEEEKKK!

What’s your favorite holiday episode of all time?

Kate! Daria! Joan! Versace’s Spring 2013 Campaign Is Supermodel Central

Leave it to Donatella Versace–fairy godmother to the bronzed glamazon supermodel species–to bring some serious faces together for the label’s latest campaign.

Versace‘s spring 2013 was shot by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggot, and stars a who’s who of catwalkers. The legendary Kate Moss, the dearly-missed Daria Werbowy, and on-the-rise Joan Smallsall posed for the latest ads, and Donatella had this to say about it: “To have three glamorous and iconic women like Kate, Daria and Joan in one campaign is not an easy feat. Mert and Marcus really outdid themselves, each image is composed like a work of art.” Wanna see?

This Was the Coolest, Most Unexpected Beauty Trend of 2012 (According to Me, at Least)

This is that week when we round up all those bests and worsts of the year, so I have to chime in with my pick for the coolest and least predictable beauty trend of 2012: orange lipstick!

Here are just a handful of the memorable orange-lipstick moments the year brought, onKourtney Kardashian …

As it turned out, orange really CAN be found in a shade to flatter every skintone, and it adds a pop of feisty color to any season–not just summer. Of course, I have to admit that I’ve only admired this fun makeup trend from afar–I haven’t actually dared to wear orange lipstick myself. I know: Booo, lame! How ’bout you ladies: Did any of you hop on the orange-lipstick train in 2012?

You May Be Dreaming of a White Christmas, but I’ve Got Erin Fetherston 2013 Pre-Fall on My Mind

I’ll be honest: I’ve never been one to dream of a white Christmas. I much prefer one that is around 45 to 50 degrees and has no form of precipitation. So while you guys are wishing for snow, I’ll just gaze at Erin Fetherston 2013 pre-fall and imagine the various pieces I’ll be taking on my warm-weather trips next year. Want to see what I’ve chosen so far?

Home for the Holidays? How Do Your Parents Really Feel About You Bringing Your Guy Along?

‘Tis the season. Fa la la. You know: all that merry good stuff. In all honesty, the holidays are serious business. Between the shopping and cooking and picking out the perfect gift, who has time to worry about family drama? Hopefully you’re one of the lucky gals who does nothave to worry about what her family will say about bringing home a significant other for the holidays…

couple-in-car-with-gifts

OK, before I go any further, MERRY CHRISTMAS! I hope you’re all at home with your loved ones enjoying the time together with some rad new gifts (and insanely good food). Maybe your guy has joined you in the festivities this year. If so, tell me the truth: how do your parents really feel about it?

J and I have been splitting the holidays between Long Island and New Jersey for the past few years now so it’s nothing new for us or our families, but it definitely took a little getting used to back in the early days. J’s parents were always pretty fine about having J and me stay over for Christmas; they had been dealing with the split-holidays thing for nearly a decade with J’s older brother and his wife. They totally understood that I was an important part of J’s life and that we wanted to spend the holidays together, just as much as we wanted to spend ‘em with our families.

My parents, on the other hand, took a little more time to get used to the fact that I wouldn’t be there on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and some of the days following. I am the oldest child of two, after all. J and I alternate which family gets us the 24th and which family gets us the 25th to be fair, and my parents and sister are learning to appreciate the time they do have with us. But J and I are lucky—both of our families were always great about welcoming us BOTH. We never felt uncomfortable or like we were unwanted; that’s why J’s family feels like my family and my family feels like his.

But I know of a girl who said her parents would KILL her if she brought her BF home for the holidays. Her family does live a few hours away from where she (and her BF) lives, so since they don’t see her all the time they want that time JUST with her. No ifs, ands, or butts about it: she doesn’t think twice about not inviting him home for the holidays because it would just create too much friction. Plus, she really wants that one-on-one time with her parents, too.

sexy prom dresses

How is it with your family? Do they welcome your partner? Did it take some time for them to warm up? And what’s the point you bring your guy home no matter what they think and they just have to deal with it? Does it have to be super-serious with him? Happy Holidays again, you guys! xo

It’s a Wonderful Life GIFs for Every Awkward Holiday Situation. Merry GIFmas!

My whole family adores It’s a Wonderful Life. We watch it every winter and quote it all year round. And while its ultimate lesson–true wealth is measured in friends, not dollars–is of course the most important takeaway, it’s not the only thing from the movie you can holiday-relate to.
